TTY? Dial 7-1-1from the Northwest ADA/IT Center June 18, 2002 By dialing 7-1-1 anywhere in the United States, you are now able to quickly initiate a telecommunications relay service call. The Federal Communications Commission has established the 711 service to eliminate the difficulties that callers have had with finding the relay service number in their area or remembering various relay numbers as they travel from state to state. Telecommunications Relay Services provides a mechanism for communication between callers who use TTYs (text telephones for persons who are deaf, hard-of-hearing or speech-impaired) and callers who use voice telephones. The mechanism is quite straightforward. A TTY user and a voice telephone user communicate through a Telecommunications Relay Service or Relay Center, where a communications assistant places the call to the voice user, and then relays the conversation by transcribing spoken content for the TTY user and reading text aloud for the voice user. Using 711, relay access is convenient, fast and uncomplicated. Want to know more?
