Resources for Prisoners with Disabilities

Many organizations who assist prisoners tend to change personnel and location frequently. Please keep this in mind while using the following directory of prisoner rights organizations and sources of assistance.

STATE AND LOCAL SERVICES FOR PRISONER RIGHTS

Self-Esteem for the Handicapped Inside Prisons (S*HIP)

Services: S*HIP is a non-profit volunteer program designed for prisoners with physical or mental disabilities or who are chronically or terminally ill.  S*HIP supports prisoners on issues of accessibility, safety and medical treatment, and provides counseling and planning to its members and their families.  S*HIP works to educate members about their own conditions and about nutrition, and to encourage self-sufficiency. 

S*HIP has chapters at the Washington State Reformatory, Twin Rivers and MSU in Monroe.  These chapters hold support group meetings and provide one-on-one counseling to members.  Additionally, S*HIP has members at every prison in Washington state.

Services: Grassroots organization works to stop police harassment, brutality, excessive force, and all acts of police violence against children and adults. WASHINGTON ATTORNEY SERVICES FOR PRISONER RIGHTS

Some attorneys represent prisoners under contracts with the DOC and others are private practice attorneys taking prison rights cases. However, the following attorneys get many letters and can take only a few cases.
